Digital Connectivity
Sheffield has an excellent digital infrastructure and is a significant location in the UK for internet connectivity given its proximity to existing national telecommunications networks. With all major providers routing a significant amount of traffic via Sheffield, businesses located in the city benefit from efficient access to the UK, Europe and the World.
Sheffield’s network infrastructure has seen major investment in recent years. BT, the UK’s largest telecommunications provider has made major investments in the city ensuring that BT’s network in Sheffield runs on the latest technology and is ready for future growth and new technologies. Virgin Media also has extensive coverage to the majority of the city and is offering its fastest available products including fibre leased lines. In addition to this, Easynet, ASK4, Level 3 and SSE Telecom have all invested to develop infrastructure including points of presence in the city.
Sheffield also benefits from the Digital Region network, the first major regional deployment of 'Superfast Broadband' in the UK. The project for South Yorkshire began in 2009 and was completed in 2012. The network includes Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham and serves a population of over 1.3million citizens, and reaches 546,000 homes and 40,000 businesses.
The infrastructure network is a wholesale, carrier-class network that enables IP-based services to be provided to citizens, businesses and the public sector throughout South Yorkshire.
Digital Region offers the opportunity to position itself within a global marketplace, giving service providers a unique opportunity to provide a next generation broadband infrastructure that will be closely watched by global players in the communications sector and beyond.
