Languages

Sheffield is one of England's most culturally diverse cities. There are currently more than 128 languages spoken in its schools. Research has shown that businesses in Sheffield have found the provision of language and cultural skills to be good, and two thirds have found it easy to train people with existing language skills in job related skills.

The large population of students from outside the UK assist employers who are recruiting native foreign language speakers. The Modern Languages department at Sheffield University, plus the number of business courses offering language modules at both Universities, means there is a pool of skilled employees available.

Recruiters in the city regularly employ staff with languages ranging from Mandarin to Danish as well as the more common business languages. Many of the city’s thriving contact centres require European languages, as do the export departments of manufacturing companies, and all report the lack of difficulty in accessing employees with the relevant skills.
