Sheffield’s design legacy and strong creative sector wins Creative Conference: OFFSET 2016

09 August 2016

Following a successful first UK appearance in London last November, the 10th edition of Dublin’s Creative Festival OFFSET will be taking place in Sheffield on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 October 2016 at the Crucible Theatre.

With more than 2,500 attendees to its Dublin event each year and more than half of those coming from outside of the city, OFFSET has fast become one of the world’s most inspirational, educational and vocational conferences for design and creative industries.  Attracting the conference to Sheffield is described as a major coup for the city which boasts an internationally acclaimed design legacy and vibrant creative sector.

The East West Locations economic report reveals that there are more than 14,450 Creative jobs in the Sheffield travel to work area (60 minute drive time). There are 1,700 creative and digital businesses in Sheffield alone and the jobs market for the city’s creative and digital specialists has grown by 22 percent in the last five years. In fact Business Sheffield, part of Creative Sheffield – the economic development arm of Sheffield City Council, refer to this as a high-growth sector; playing a significant role in the economy by creating well-paid jobs and sparking start-ups within the city.

The two-day conference will take place at the Crucible on 21 and 22 October and is set to attract more than 900 delegates. Sheffield Hallam University is lead sponsor to the festival and it will form part of Sheffield’s Catalyst Festival of Creativity (running until November) and be a main feature of Sheffield’s Design Week (22nd – 30th October 2016). Both have exciting and varied programmes, including exhibitions, workshops, talks, design conferences, installations, product launches and open studios that will transform the whole of the city centre into hub of creative and digital activity.

Cllr Leigh Bramall Sheffield City Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business and Economy said: “OFFSET is a gem of a conference to attract to Sheffield. Conferences are a great way to showcase Sheffield’s business credentials to a domestic and international audience and OFFSET will do just that whilst also helping us to grow the profile of the many creative firms that operate here.

“Economically, conferences push up the city’s overnight stays and generate return visits from delegates impressed by Sheffield as a city-break destination. OFFSET is a great addition to an already impressive line-up of business conventions and Marketing Sheffield’s Convention Bureau has been working closely with the organisers and city-partners to ensure its first visit to the city is a success.

“Hosting it in the city centre will enable us to showcase our vibrant offering. With the added benefit of this conference forming part of the wider Catalyst Festival of Creativity and Design Week, it’s a major coup for the city.”

Representing industry at all levels since 2009, OFFSET speakers are described as key disruptors and influencers in their fields, driving everything from huge global campaigns to awe inspiring personal projects and will speak about their work, ideas and inspirations, giving audiences an insight into their practices and personal perspectives on their careers over the course of the two-day event.

Commenting on this exciting new endeavour, OFFSET Joint Creative Director, Bren Byrne, said, “Offering our audience insights into new innovations in both practice and thinking in the Design space is at the core of what we aim to provide. Not only has Sheffield got an incredible Design legacy but also they are at the forefront of a very exciting international movement that recognises the importance of Creativity and Design to the future success of a contemporary city. We are delighted to be bringing OFFSET to Sheffield as our new UK home.”

Sally Wade, Head of Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA) at Sheffield Hallam University, lead sponsor of the conference, said, “We are delighted to support OFFSET coming to our city and it’s a testament to the strength of design and, more broadly, the creative industries in Sheffield. OFFSET will be one of the marquee events of our Catalyst Festival of Creativity. It is also a great opportunity for students and design professionals to see internationally renowned speakers discuss their work. Our students have always found OFFSET events to be highly inspirational. We look forward to showing everyone involved what Sheffield has to offer."
