Health Tech company under the microscope

The NHS is a truly unique institution and the UK continues to be a hotbed of digital health innovation. But health technology comes with risks and when technology fails, lives are at stake. The UK is the first country in the world to implement risk management standards right across the digital health marketplace to drive quality and safety. It’s a complex maze for the uninitiated and much of the specialist assurance work has to be conducted by qualified healthcare professionals. And that’s where we come in - at Safehand, we specialise in helping organisations to navigate that compliance journey and ensure that digital health products are safe.

Safehand was launched in March 2016. As the CEO, I recognised that the super-niche field of digital health assurance is not an obvious career choice for an anaesthetist, and after many years of medical training, swapping the laryngoscope for the laptop took a huge leap of faith. It turns out that being a CEO can be a lonely and challenging place and starting a business from scratch is a very steep learning curve. That’s where Business Sheffield and our Business Growth Advisor Morgan Killick have played an important role. It gave us the confidence to take on staff, to recognise and leverage what we do well and helped us plan for the future. Sometimes you need a nudge in the right direction and it’s surprising how volunteering to report progress to someone every few months focusses the strategy and motivation even further!

Now, after a lot of hard work, some sleepless nights, and help from Business Sheffield, I can say with confidence that the gamble has paid off.. Within six months we were supporting a dozen different companies and needed to take on staff, and we now have over 40 active projects and continue to grow. Whilst Safehand HQ is a far cry from the daily drama of the operating theatre, the privilege of working with so many innovative organisations brings new and fascinating challenges every day. There really is never a dull moment.

My experience has taught me many things: that knowledge and skills are transferable, understanding your market is key, and last but not least that help and advice from the right people at the right time, can make the difference between succeeding and not just surviving.
