Sheffield rises in international association meetings rankings

08 May 2018

The success of Marketing Sheffield’s Conference Ambassador Programme continues to build, as Sheffield has been ranked amongst the Top 10 English cities for international association meetings.

The annual International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings, published each year, are one of the most eagerly anticipated publications in the conference and meetings industry.

Sheffield ranks 124th in the ICCA Europe rankings and the 6th most popular English city, moving up two places from 8th in the 2017 publication

London is still the most popular English city in the rankings with Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham also in the Top 10. Barcelona is ranked the Number 1 city in the world, while the UK is the third ranking country behind USA and Germany.

Sheffield’s rising position in the rankings comes off the back of the 10 Year anniversary of the city’s successful Conference Ambassador Programme, which works in partnership with key individuals from both universities and teaching hospitals to identify and bid for potential meetings to come to Sheffield.

Due to the world leading research which takes place at these institutions across the city, conferences born out of this strategic relationship are often of international status.  Marketing Sheffield’s role is to support the ambassador throughout the process, from venue recommendations to services for delegates.

Sheffield’s conference market generates a huge amount for the local economy, estimated to be worth £113 million every year.

Emma France, Marketing Manager for Business Tourism and Trade at Marketing Sheffield, said “The ICCA rankings offer a valuable snapshot of which cities are being chosen for international association meetings all over the world.

“Sheffield’s position as the 6th most popular English city is testament to how much world class research is already happening in our city and confirms Sheffield as a reliable and experienced destination host for international association conferences.

“Marketing Sheffield is firmly focussed on growing international meetings here through our hugely successful Conference Ambassador Programme. Our ambassadors are absolutely critical in winning these events; working in partnership with them and our universities we hope to host more and more international meetings in the city”.

This news comes as Marketing Sheffield attends one of the industries busiest events, The Meetings Show  27-28 June at London’s Olympia with partners from Sheffield Hallam University, SIV Events, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Theatres. Together they’re set to showcase the city to meeting professionals from both the UK and abroad, who are looking for destinations to consider for future conferences and events.
