2013 will mark 100 years since Stainless steel was discovered by Harry Brearley, a breakthrough which would revolutionize the modern world and put Sheffield on the global map.

As a result, Sheffield is to host a year long celebratory events programme to ensure that this historic landmark is commemorated in style and reaffirm the legacy of innovation which still exists in the city today.

Exhibitions and events confirmed as part of the 100 YSS programme so far include:

  • Designed to Shine exhibition, the Millennium Gallery, 16 Februray-13 October
  • Rustless- The Harry Brearley Story, Kelham Island Museum, 1 April-17 November
  • BSSA & SMEA Conference and Exhibition, Sheffield University, 11-13 June
  • David Mellor Exhibition, Sheffield Hallam University, Autumn 2013
  • Women of Steel Concert, Sheffield City Hall, Saturday 9 November
  • Outokumpu Open Day, Saturday 15 June

Existing city festivals that will have a 100 YSS offering as part of their event programme in 2013 include:

  • Galvanize Festival of Contemporary Metal, 3-31 May
  • Global Manufacturing Festival, 17-19 April
  • DocFest, 12-16 June
  • Tramlines, 19-21 July
  • Off The Shelf Festival, September-October
  • Sheffield Food Festival, September
