Rachel Williams, Founder and Director of ALBUS & FLORA shares with us her story on how she launched her own natural skin care range.
What were your ambitions?
I love challenges and learning new things. I have always wanted to have my own company, to create and build something, but never found the right path, the right idea. Two successful careers in science/academia and elite sport later, and a career break in the French Alps finally led to the development of ALBUS & FLORA and the opportunity to combine my love of natural skincare and the outdoors to create my own brand and product range.
What encouragement support did you to start your business up?
My parents, sister and brother-in-law have been an amazing source of support and encouragement – without them ALBUS & FLORA would not be where it is today. My friends have been with me through all the ups and downs of this journey and together with my family, have pulled me through some truly difficult times. Business Sheffield has been a huge source of support and guidance, the encouragement, advice and guidance I have received from Business support Advisor Christina Lima-Trindade, has been outstanding. They have been with me every step of the way from the germ of an idea to the UK launch of ALBUS & FLORA’s launch with retailer.
Why did you choose to start your business up in Sheffield?
I was working for the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, and as a city renowned for its passion and love of the outdoors it made sense to start the business here. The business is set to develop rapidly in the next 5 years, developing markets with the UK and Europe within beauty and leisure sectors, and increasing our current our product range.
What is the most challenging thing about running your own business and what is the most rewarding?
The most challenging aspect without question is managing cash flow and ensuring there is sufficient working capital to fulfil orders and develop new product lines. The most rewarding aspect of the business is having the knowledge that our customers love our products and that they make a difference to their day.
If you were giving careers advice to your 14 year-old self, what would you say?
Work hard, learn, see every challenge and set back as an opportunity, don’t give up, follow your dreams, anything and everything is possible!!
