Formed in 2005 as Solutions for Snoring, at S4S we now offer a full range of products for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, bruxism and misaligned teeth.

Our business was already established and doing well, when in 2013 we were contacted by Business Sheffield, who initially introduced us to several Sheffield based companies and helped us with a funding application to gain financial support to purchase two 3D printers.  

The printers were crucial to our continued business success and would form a fundamental part of our growth strategy for the future. This allowed us to move into 3D rapid prototyping for use with our Smilelign Clear Orthodontic Aligner business, and having the 3D printing in house helped us to reduce costs and gave us a commercial advantage. This in turn enabled us to expand, create jobs, purchase larger premises and increase company turnover much quicker than in previous years.

Then in 2014 we were introduced to Matthew Sibley, Growth Advisor at Business Sheffield who has proved to be an extremely valuable business mentor to us over the years. I come from an academic, non-commercial background so running a business was a baptism of fire for me. It is at least due in part to Matthew’s support, coaching, and guidance that my business partner Neil Bullement and I not only didn’t get burnt, but have seen our business go from strength to strength in such a short space of time. I think our business would still have been a success had we had to ‘go it alone’ however, with the help of Matthew and Business Sheffield we have grown and continued to grow beyond our expectations year on year. To put it in perspective, during our time working with Matthew and Business Sheffield  we’ve moved from a 2500 sq ft premises into a 9000 sq ft, increased our staffing from 16 full time staff to in excess of 50 staff and our turnover has reached £3 million.

Business Sheffield has introduced us to companies and educational institutions that we would never have met otherwise. Being an innovative business, we are regularly looking to produce and manufacture new products or develop and implement software to improve our efficiencies, so the introductions to Sheffield based Beckett MIM and the AMRC have proved invaluable, allowing us to manufacture here in the UK, and export worldwide.

With Matthew’s help we also managed to gain SIP funding which allowed us to undertake product and materials testing within the Sheffield Hallam University, and we’ve recently been introduced to Switch Stance; a Sheffield based Digital Agency who are now working with us on several projects including an App for our Smilelign Clear Braces and a custom built CRM system to help with our sales and marketing.

In summary: The help and support we’ve received from Business Sheffield over the years has been fantastic and I cannot recommend their services highly enough. What is even more incredible is that all this help and advice we’ve benefited from has been completely free of charge. I would strongly urge any Sheffield business, no matter their size, no matter if they’re a recent start-up or have been established decades, to make the most of what Business Sheffield has to offer.
