Sheffield Steps up Conferencing Profile
12 June 2017
The success of Marketing Sheffield’s Conference Ambassador Programme has received a further boost as Sheffield has been ranked amongst the Top 10 English cities for international association meetings.
The rankings have been published by global meetings industry network ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) and are one of the most eagerly anticipated meetings publications within the business tourism industry.
Sheffield was placed at 134 in the overall ICCA Europe rankings, but when ranked country by country, was the 8th most popular in England. London is still the most popular English city in the rankings with Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham also in the Top 10, while Paris is ranked Number 1 in Europe.
The Sheffield Conference Ambassador Programme actively promotes and generates association meetings activity for the city, by working closely with colleagues across the universities and teaching hospitals, to tap into research specialisms and help identify and bid for potential meetings to be hosted in Sheffield.
Emma France, Marketing Manager - Business Tourism at Marketing Sheffield said: “The ICCA rankings offer a valuable snapshot of which cities are being chosen for international association meetings all over the world.
“Sheffield’s position as the 8th most popular English city is testament to how much world class research is already happening in our city and confirms Sheffield as a reliable and experienced destination host for international association conferences.
“Marketing Sheffield’s focus is a new strategic approach to growing international meetings here and it’s no coincidence that this is timed for the 10th anniversary of our Conference Ambassador Programme. Our ambassadors are absolutely critical in winning these events; working in partnership with them and our universities we hope to host more and more international meetings in the city.”
While the Conference Ambassador Programme is one Marketing Sheffield’s key strategic initiatives, the team also undertake a variety of other activity to help raise Sheffield’s profile and the news comes as the team are set to attend one of the industry’s busiest conferencing showcases this week, as The Meetings Show takes place at London’s Olympia (13 - 15 June).
Marketing Sheffield will be joined by a number of key partners from Sheffield Hallam University, SIV Events and the University of Sheffield, as they seek to target international event professionals who are looking for prospective destinations for conferences/events.
At The Meetings Show, the team will be promoting Sheffield’s credentials as a compact and outdoor city, showing how these characteristics can impact positively on conference delegates and offer a unique event experience.
