Balsam Bash

29 Jun 2022 10:00 - 14:00

On the following Wednesdays the SCC ranger service will be holding volunteer days to remove Himalayan balsam plants before they set seed. June 15th , 22nd , 29th. July 6th , 13th.

This is an invasive species which, if left unchecked, dominates large areas and outcompetes native plants, having a negative effect on the biodiversity of flora and fauna. Controlling the spread involves pulling up the plants by hand - plenty of information available online and instruction will be provided on the day.

Meet at the Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve Visitor Centre on Stone Lane at 10 a.m. on any or all of the days. Sessions will run until 2 p.m. but there is no obligation to stay for the full period.

Sturdy footwear, long trousers and sleeves and gardening gloves are advisable as the plants grow on rough ground and among nettles and thorns.

Toilets and a large free car park are available. Bring your own refreshments.
