Lunchtime Talk: How Do I Look? With Nahem Shoa
Hear contemporary artist Nahem Shoa talk about his oil portraits of British people of colour, why he felt the need to paint them and why they remain very relevant today.
You’ll find out how Shoa approached painting his work Giant Head of Gbenga in Profile, currently on display in the Graves Gallery.
This was the first profile portrait the artist painted in a series of 28 'Giant Head' portraits that he made between 2000 and 2006, in which each sitter has his mouth slightly open as if in conversation with each other.
Shoa will also discuss his friendship with fellow artist, Gbenga Ilumoka and why he chose to paint this portrait on such a grand scale, directly from life.
