Alumno, the award-winning specialists in the design and development of good quality and modern accommodation for students, in conjunction with Places for People, and Homes for Students, have been announced as the key sponsors for this year’s Photo North, Sheffield Student Photography Competition.
Photo North, one of the UK’s premier photography festivals, has launched their Sheffield Student Photo competition with the brief ‘Your Community’.
The esteemed judging panel include Channel 4’s Picture Team, and finalists will be exhibited at Park Hill later this year.
The brief asks students to consider, what does community mean in 2023? This competition is to share through photography, a personal interpretation of community.
This competition is only open to students.
The project may want to explore a place of worship or employment; or focus on sexuality, politics, sport, a tradition, or other interest.
This is a fantastic opportunity for all students to embark on this competition as a summer project, it is open to any student, irrespective of what they are studying, they can simply be an avid photographer wishing to enhance their skills.
David Campbell, MD of Alumno, the Developer behind the accommodation for 356 students in the iconic post-war housing estate, commented: “We are delighted to bring the Photo North competition to Sheffield. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to get their work in front of a prestigious judging team including Channel 4 Pictures Team and Photo North Curators. It’s a great way for students to connect to the city and express how they see it, and I’m looking forward to seeing their interpretations. The celebration evening also offers students the opportunity to find out more about living at Béton House, the student accommodation at Park Hill, we are proud to be hosting a rolling programme of exhibitions to include the winning entries from the competition.”
Sharon Price, of Photo North, comments: “Sheffield is a unique city, and we hope that this competition will both provoke and enthuse interest to generate some telling and inspirational entries. Ordinary, everyday moments can be significant and offer a unique and fascinating universal document of community today and we are hugely excited about what we will see from this competition”.
Winner and runners up from the competition will be unveiled at an exciting celebration event, with a full evening of exhibitions, talks & screenings, on November 16th at Beton House, Park Hill.
The competition is open now, with deadline for entries 24th October 2023. https://www.photonorthfestival.co.uk/sheffield-student-competition-2023
