Something Strange Book Club - Nightmare Alley

28 Nov 2024 18:30 - 20:00

In 1940s New York, down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle endears himself to a clairvoyant and her mentalist husband at a traveling carnival. Using newly acquired knowledge, Carlisle crafts a golden ticket to success by swindling the elite and wealthy. Hoping for a big score, he soon hatches a scheme to con a dangerous tycoon with help from a mysterious psychologist who might be his most formidable opponent yet. We'll be discussing the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, alongside the 2021 film adaptation, directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Colette, Willem Defoe and Rooney Mara. Join us at the Boston Arms for a chat about the book and film - even if you haven't finished or hated it, we want to hear your thoughts. Free to attend. Something strange book club is a film adaptation-themed book group meeting every month to discuss a book and its adaptation. Everyone welcome, always.
