Summer at the National Emergency Services Museum

Join the National Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield as they host a jam-packed summer of activities for families during the school holidays.

Taking place from Wednesday 26 July right through to Friday 1 September, there's a whole host of extra activities on offer, that you can enjoy for FREE when you pay a visit to the museum.  

Explore and play your way around the museum with the Play Trail, learn more with special talks, get creative with craft sessions, jump aboard the RNLI Lifeboat and see two brand new exhibitions celebrating the Service Animals (by the RSPCA) and Air Ambulance Services.

The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday weekly and will be open Bank Holiday Monday 28 August.

Wednesday 26 July - Friday 1 September: Play trail - Throughout the summer holidays young visitors can take part in a play trail around the museum. Have fun with it and be as creative as you can.

Wednesday 26 July: NHS Storytelling - Come and listen to a story all about the start of the NHS in celebration of its 75th anniversary this year. Story telling sessions at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Wednesday 26 July: Opening of Propellors and Paramedics, a new air ambulance exhibition - This new air ambulance exhibition, Propellers and Paramedics, will be open to the public from today. Come and find out more about their amazing helicopter heroes. All day.

Thursday 27 July: the NHS in their collection - Get hands on with their collection and see some historic objects relating to the history of the NHS that are not normally on public display. All day.

Friday 28 July: jump aboard the City of Sheffield lifeboat - The 47-foot RNLI lifeboat will be open to visitors for guided their. Explore the cabin, head out on a rescue and learn more about the amazing lifesaving work of the RNLI and its crews. All day.

Wednesday 2 August: Create their own air ambulance - Celebrate their new air ambulance exhibition by creating their own air ambulance picture at their craft station. All day.

Thursday 3 August: Opening of 200 years of changing animals' lives, a new exhibition by the RSPCA - A new temporary exhibition curated by the RSPCA and hosted by the museum, 200 years of changing animals' lives. Discover the exhibition and make their own paper fishbowl to take home. All day.

Friday 4 August: jump aboard the City of Sheffield lifeboat - Their 47-foot RNLI lifeboat will be open to visitors for guided their. Explore the cabin, head out on a rescue and learn more about the amazing lifesaving work of the RNLI and its crews. All day.

Wednesday 16 August: Exploring childhood past - What kind of toys did people used to play with? How is it different to what they play with now? Discover some of the toys they have in their collection, see how they work and think about their own toy designs. All day.

Thursday 17 August: Fire collection art - Take inspiration from the museum's fire handling collection to create their own artwork, using different types of medium and techniques including charcoal, sketching, collage and paint. Come and create something unique just for you. All day.

Friday 18 August: jump aboard the City of Sheffield lifeboat - The 47-foot RNLI lifeboat will be open to visitors for guided their. Explore the cabin, head out on a rescue and learn more about the amazing lifesaving work of the RNLI and its crews. All day.
 

Wednesday 23 August: Around the world collection - Explore objects from around the world and learn more about the emergency services in other countries. Who else uses flashing blue lights, and where would you see red and even orange? Come along and find out. All day. 

Thursday 24 August: Spot the contraband! Exploring their border force collection - Can you guess what shouldn’t be packed in these suitcases? In their border force collection, they have items that have been confiscated by the border force. Can you can spot them? All day. 

Friday 25 August: jump aboard the City of Sheffield lifeboat - The 47-foot RNLI lifeboat will be open to visitors for guided their. Explore the cabin, head out on a rescue and learn more about the amazing lifesaving work of the RNLI and its crews. All day.
 

Wednesday 30 August: Four-legged friends - police and fire horses - Head over to their craft station to make their very own police horse to take home with you. And learn more about some of the horses that lived at the museum when it first opened as a fire, police and ambulance station. All day.
 

Thursday 31 August: Inspire (their story, their story) - Come and find out about some inspirational people from history and emergency services personnel who have done something amazing. Tell us about the people who inspire you and find out about some of the modern faces who will be becoming part of this exhibition in the future. All day.
