Talk: Saving lives at sea - the story of HM Coastguard in six key objects

20 Oct 2023 16:00 - 17:00

This talk reveals the often hidden history of HM Coastguard - the oldest of the major emergency services. It charts the beginnings of the service as an anti-smuggling force in the early 19th century through to its role attending shipwrecks and safeguarding vessels.

This amazing story is told through six original objects from the historic collection of HM Coastguard. You will have the chance to get up close and personal with historic objects, many of which are not currently on public display.

As attendance is strictly limited, these events promise to be a more interactive, personal and intimate experience for visitors, held within the atmospheric spaces of our exhibition galleries.

Tickets cost just £5 per person and can be purchased without museum entry tickets. However, please note that these talks are taking place outside museum opening hours and attendees will not be able to explore the museum.

If you would like to combine a talk with a full visit to the museum, please purchase a museum entry ticket in addition to a talk ticket.
