Tess Jaray is one of the most influential British painters of the last century. For over six decades she has continued to explore form and space in abstract painting, governed by an interest in architecture, pattern, repetition and colour.
Inspired by Italian Renaissance and Islamic architecture, Jaray’s work dismantles once recognisable forms, reconstructing and articulating them as pure, abstract shapes. The exhibition presents a number of Jaray’s paintings and drawings selected from the past 60 years accompanied by a selection of her inspirations and influences, illuminating her approach, vision and creative practice.
