Walking Tour: 20th Century Black History of Sheffield

24 Aug 2023 14:00

Were any Black figures born in, and life-time residents of, Sheffield?

How did Sheffield respond to colonialism, and to Black presence in Sheffield post-Windrush?

The tour will consider the legacy of these aspects on the city. You’ll discover the lives and stories of remarkable figures including Paul Robeson, Malcolm X and Olive Morris, as well as organisations such as British Black Panthers and the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

The walk will start at Weston Park Museum and end at the Graves Gallery in Sheffield city centre.

Mark Hutchinson is a historian, retired teacher and campaigner. He has for several years led historical city walks that highlight Sheffield’s Black history past particularly from an African-Caribbean perspective.

In his spare time, he has acted as a trustee for the charitable organisations Journey to Justice and Sheffield Environmental Movement.

He is a long-time Elvis fan.
