Have you been to Whirlow Brook Park? This park is on the south-west, Ecclesall side of the city, beside the Limb Brook Valley Round Walk , Whinfell Quarry Gardens and near Whirlow Hall Farm Trust.
It is a beautifully designed landscape with a countryside feel. It is a natural playground, no equipment, just loads of space for children to run around and have outdoor adventures.
It was left in trust to the city and is free. Bus routes: 81, 271 and 272.
The Friends of Whirlow Brook Park have been working hard to restore it for beauty, biodiversity and people. They are thinking about ways to help get young children to engage with wild nature. They hope they will remain switched on forever!
They plan to develop a WOW (short for WhirlOW) trail in the park with interesting nature-based activities aimed at pre-school, infants and juniors. They are fundraising for such items as a large magnifier, wooden sculptures of wild animals, tree-trunk caterpillar, living willow den, story telling circle, natural acoustic instrument, etc. They are open to your ideas and participation and appreciate your support.
Now's the time to get growing for summer joy in your garden, allotment, window-boxes or indoors. Please save some spare seedlings , pot up extra's, divide chunky perennials, herbs and spring bulbs. Flowers, veg or fruit bushes etc. Yes, to early harvests of rhubarb or other crops or cut flowers!
Please bring them along. All welcome. Sharpening for small garden hand tools - secateurs, loppers, shears, edge trimmers etc available on the day.
