What is the decarbonisation routemap?

The decarbonisation routemap is your guide to reducing energy costs and improving how your business runs.

The Routemap is a business‑led plan, developed by the Council in partnership with Sheffield businesses and supported by Sheffield Chamber of Commerce’s Sustainable Business Network and other city partners.

The routemap sets out practical actions to help businesses reduce emissions, improve efficiency and support Sheffield’s transition to a low carbon economy.

It has been shaped through workshops, interviews and collaboration with organisations across the city, ensuring it reflects real business challenges and opportunities.

Rows of black solar panels installed on a corrugated metal rooftop. The panels are arranged in neat grids, reflecting light under a cloudy sky. In the background, there are additional rooftops, trees, and a glimpse of the horizon.
A landscaped courtyard with a row of evenly spaced trees on a bright green lawn, surrounded by modern glass and stone buildings. In the center, reflective silver spheres are placed along the walkway, leading toward a large glass atrium with an arched wooden frame. The area is clean and contemporary, with clear blue skies above.

What this means for your business?

Reducing energy use can help lower costs, improve efficiency and strengthen how your business operates. The routemap brings this together into clear, practical steps based on how your business works. It focuses on areas where you can have the biggest impact, including:

  • Energy use and efficiency in buildings
  • Heating, equipment and processes
  • Business travel and logistics
  • Supply chains and purchasing

Alongside environmental benefits, businesses involved in developing the Routemap highlighted potential financial savings, improved competitiveness, staff engagement and reputational benefits. The Routemap helps you understand what action makes sense for your business now, and how to plan for the future.

You can also hear directly from the Council, partners and local businesses at the launch event on 22 April, where the routemap and available support will be introduced. Register for the event on Eventbrite.

Low Carbon support for Sheffield businesses

Sheffield City Council’s Low Carbon programme, delivered by Business Sheffield, is a key way the Business & Economy Decarbonisation Routemap will be turned into action. The Low Carbon programme provides practical, tailored support to help businesses reduce energy use and carbon emissions, while improving efficiency and lowering costs. Support includes:

  • One‑to‑one advice and guidance
  • Energy audits to identify where savings and carbon reductions can be made
  • Support to plan and prioritise low‑carbon investments
  • Access to grant funding towards eligible decarbonisation projects

Support is available to businesses at different stages of their journey, from those just starting to understand their energy use, through to businesses looking to take the next step in reducing emissions from buildings, equipment, processes or transport. The Business & Economy Decarbonisation Routemap helps businesses understand what actions to take, while the Low Carbon programme helps businesses understand how to deliver them in practice, with advice, funding and specialist support.
