Indie scene in Crookes, Walkley & Broomhill

Sharing the same hill, Crookes and Walkley are close enough to one another that you could easily take a shopping stroll round both in a morning or afternoon, and maybe even add on a visit to Broomhill too. All are home to a selection of unique retail businesses.

On South Road in Walkley there’s an array of interesting indie shops such as Walkley Beer Co, Walkley Community Store, Gerrys Bakery, Plantology and gift shop The Walkley Press.

Further up the hill, along the main road in Crookes you’ll find shops such as Meadow Small, Sorrel’s Cocoa Bakery (where it's not uncommon to find a queue), award-winning Small Stuff and Flourish. Just down the road in Broomhill, is the legendary Record Collector, quite possibly Sheffield’s most famous record shop.

Plantology

Plantology is a like-minded team of florists selling plants and flowers in Sheffield, inspired by the beauty of nature and the limitless creations that can be made using them. Alongside plants and dried flowers, Plantology also sell an array of pots and gifts and homeware.

This social club in Crookes plays host to a variety of different music and themed nights, with a great eclectic crowd including students and local residents.

The York

The York has been serving home cooked food, fine wines and perfect ales to the masses since September 2010. You can make yourself at home in front of the open fire, grab a table amongst the curiosities or relax in the snug.

The Nottingham House

The Notty is a friendly pub located at the heart of Broomhill in Sheffield. They are student friendly and have many university sports clubs and associations using the pub as their base and meeting place. They have bands playing regularly on weekend evenings and quiz nights.

El Toro

Năm Sông

Nǎm Sông means 'five rivers' in Vietnamese, as an ode to the establishment's founding city of Sheffield which famously has five rivers. It's an all-day-all-night coffee shop, restaurant and bar serving up delicious Vietnamese food, drinks, and of course the legendary phin filter coffee.

The Steel Cauldron

Dana is a vegetarian cafe (with vegan options) in Crookes, Sheffield. They sell locally roasted coffee, fine teas from a number of suppliers around the world, and a selection of vegetarian and vegan snacks and meals.

Incredibly good Neapolitan-style pizzas are the draw at this snug eatery, which also serves wine & beer. Slow-proofed dough topped with the finest ingredients from Campania, cooked in under 90 seconds at 500 degrees resulting in a light and airy pizza with a slightly charred crust.

Lokanta

Freshly prepared Turkish Mediterranean food is perfect for sharing. A selection of Meze dishes makes a relaxed meal. Or choose a meze as a starter followed by a main course of grilled fish, meat or an Anatolian inspired special including vegetarian choices. 

The Hallamshire House

Another excellent Thornbridge brewery pub, The Hallamshire House in Crookesmoor has a fantastic, traditional setting - complete with full size snooker table - but with loads of great live music and other entertainment events, as well as great food and cosy areas to settle in.

The Blind Monkey

Built-in 1846 the building was originally a grocery shop where locals sold bottled beer that could be refilled. In 1977, it became the Firwood Cottage where it was modernized as a Tetley house. Re-born as the Blind Monkey in May 2018, several original features have been retained, including the Victorian façade and the fireplace in the bar. A warm welcome awaits as well as real ales and much more including ample outside tables and covered heated spaces.
