Lecture Series | Swimming in Opium: The Spa Experience in Georgian Buxton

20 May 2026 19:00 - 20:00

Eighteenth-century Buxton attracted visitors in search of health, diversion, and marriage. Consequently, bathing and drinking the waters formed only part of the daily routine.

Using Lady Hester Newdigate’s letters and the account book of Lady Jane Macartney, Dr Peter Collinge returns to Wentworth Woodhouse to present an entertaining account of learning to swim, opium consumption, assemblies, social encounters, excursions, and shopping.
