Heritage Open Days: Battle of the Architects Tour

20 Sep 2025 11:00

As part of this year’s Heritage Open Days theme of architecture, Sheffield General Cemetery invites visitors to step into a world of striking contrasts and bold design. On this special Guided Tour, discover how two very different architectural visions shaped the Cemetery’s unique character.

From Samuel Worth’s dramatic Egyptian-inspired gateway to William Flockton’s refined neo-gothic chapels and monuments, you’ll explore how these styles reflected changing Victorian tastes in design, belief, and commemoration. Alongside the tour, outdoor exhibition boards and an indoor display in the Samuel Worth Chapel will delve deeper into the Cemetery’s architectural story.

Visitors can also enjoy a self-guided trail of our listed monuments and structures, and there will be hands-on creative activities for children to enjoy. Set in the peaceful surroundings of this Grade II* listed Victorian garden cemetery, this free event offers a fascinating insight into the meeting of two minds, and two styles, that helped shape one of Sheffield’s most remarkable heritage sites.
