Join Sheffield's Orienteering community

Are you the sort of person who enjoys going off the beaten track? Who craves adventure but doesn’t like to follow the crowd? Then read on...

Orienteering is a competitive sport in which runners find their way across rough terrain using a map and compass. And the community of orienteers in Sheffield couldn’t be stronger, with events held most weeks across the city, for all ages and skill ranges. With so many inner-city parks, Sheffield is a great place to take up the sport, while the surrounding Peak District countryside provides challenging terrain for the more experienced.

Not only does orienteering teach you useful navigation skills, it's also fun. You'll feel a great sense of independence and accomplishment after reaching the destination on your own. It’s perfect for those who fancy a challenge or are fed up of relying on other people when it comes to directions. And, as a bonus, it's a really cheap way of keeping fit.

South Yorkshire Orienteers run events every month on a Saturday for children and adult beginners in Endcliffe Park, Western Park and Ecclesall Woods, amongst other parks, as well as regular coaching sessions. If you get competitive, you could try one of the many bigger regional competitions that take place in the forests and moorlands on the outskirts of the city or even try out to represent South Yorkshire in national competitions – all of which are listed on British Orienteering.
