A Tour of City Road Cemetery

28 May 2024 17:30 - 20:00

Sheffield City Council’s Bereavement Service are delighted to invite you for a tour of City Road Cemetery on Tuesday 28th May 2024 (17:30 – 20:00).

The Bereavement Service is proud to be responsible for managing the city’s 16 cemeteries, 2 crematoria and the garden of remembrance at Hutcliffe Wood. Sheffield Cemeteries account for around 359 acres of greenspace across the city, including the 100-acre site at City Road.

Approximately 3,000 cremations and 800 burials take place annually across these sites, providing an inclusive, compassionate, and caring service for all our bereaved families. The service staff undertake maintenance and upkeep of the sites, facilities, and memorials.

The tour will be a great opportunity for you to learn about the history of the famous City Road site, which has seen over 167,000 burials and 210,000 cremations. It will begin in the main building, where we will show you our columbarium, halls of remembrance and archive room. You will then go on a walking history tour of the cemetery and you’ll have the chance to see the site’s first grave, the blitz garden, the war memorials, and much more. The tour will finish in the chapel and crematorium where a member of staff will demonstrate how we operate the cremators and conduct a funeral service. Refreshments will be provided in the chapel and allow you to put questions to members of the Bereavement Service.

Additional Information

The Bereavement Service want the tour to be educational, informative, and interesting and to give you a unique perspective on their duties and responsibilities as a service. The event is free to attend but as there are only a limited number of spaces available, please sign up at your earliest possible convenience.

The walking tour of the cemetery takes place on designated paths and walkways, but you are advised to wear suitable footwear and clothing. This section of the tour will last for approximately 45 minutes.

This event is being delivered as part of the Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival. There are over 40 free events taking place across Sheffield during the month-long festival in May.
