The Role of the Coroner: A Talk with the Investigator of Unexplained or Sudden Deaths

09 May 2024 09:30 - 12:00

Sheffield City Council and HM Coroner are delighted to invite you to a talk with the Senior Coroner for South Yorkshire (West), Mrs. Tanyka Rawden.

The Coroner’s role is to investigate sudden, violent or unexpected deaths. They are independent, and do not work for any organisation. They are appointed by the local authority who have the legal responsibility to provide the Coroner with the facilities to carry out their work. They have the power to make whatever inquiries are necessary to establish the cause of death.

This may include a post-mortem examination (electronic or invasive), obtaining witness statements and medical records, or holding an inquest. Inquests will also take place with a jury if the cause of death is violent, unnatural or is not known, and occurred whilst in state detention, was due to a notifiable disease, a notifiable accident or an act or omission of a police officer. The Coroner always has the discretion to call a jury in any case.

Additional Information

This event is as a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to gain a unique insight and understanding of the duties and responsibilities that the Coroner and her officers have to investigate sudden or unexplained deaths. Around 36% of deaths nationally are referred to Coroners and over 700 per year in Sheffield require an inquest.

The event will take place in the Coroner’s Court and members of the public will have the chance to ask questions, gain knowledge of how deaths are investigated and learn about what happens during an inquest. The Coroner will provide an insight into her role and what it is like to be responsible for answering the four questions, who died, where, when and how.

The court is located at Medio-Legal Centre, a purpose-built facility which houses the public mortuary, Coroner’s Courts and Coroner’s Office.

Anyone can attend the event and we would be delighted to welcome you. There are only a limited number of spaces available, so please sign up at your earliest possible convenience.

This event is being delivered as part of the Sheffield Life, Loss and Death Festival. There are over 40 free events taking place across Sheffield during the month-long festival in May.
